According to history, the first settlement in the Clifton and Bantry Bay area occurred in 1783 when a botanical garden was established on the lower slopes of Lions Head.  Back then, Clifton was known as Schoenmakers Gat or Cobblers Cave.  The story goes that an old shoemaker lived in the Clifton Caves and when the farmers used to pass on their way to sell their produce in Cape Town, he would mend their shoes.

In 1890, Schoenmakers Gat was renamed after Bessie Clifton, who ran the only hotel in the area.  By the 1900's, Clifton-on-Sea became a popular summer holiday destination with holidaymakers from Cape Town and the surrounds and eventually they started building small wooden beach houses.  Over the years, Clifton-on-Sea property evolved and became known simply as ‘Clifton property', also becoming the gem of Cape Town's Atlantic Seaboard.
